Lakefront ATCT
93 foot tall air traffic control tower
Location: Lakefront Airport, New Orleans
Date built:
Date of test:
Purpose of Test: In August of 2005, the facility was exposed to high velocity winds generated by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent water surge forces. The purpose of the test was to establish, through advanced structural engineering analyses using a state-of-the-art computer analysis program, the capacity of the tower shaft to withstand high wind velocities, and to determine its capacity to sustain wind velocities well above those specified by buildings codes.
